From software development to the system around it
Richard Durnall is the author of the original Lean, Agile and organisational-design writing published on this domain. His early biography describes a career that crossed hands-on technology work, airline systems, manufacturing and consulting. These experiences help explain the blog’s recurring interest in the relationship between software delivery and the wider organisation.
In that self-written account, he describes becoming interested in computers through machines including the Commodore, Amiga and Sinclair Spectrum. He left school at sixteen and worked in a local IT business across sales, customer service, production and technical support. Seeing several parts of the same business became an early influence on his interest in systems rather than isolated technical tasks.
He later studied Computer Science at Aston University in Birmingham, reporting a first-class honours degree. His biography describes a British Airways placement involving Heathrow airport systems and e-business, followed by software work on self-service check-in. These details come from his own historical account; they are not a newly conducted interview or independent verification of every project.
A dated professional timeline
EARLY CAREER · SELF-REPORTED
British Airways and Ford
After airline systems work, Durnall describes spending four years on Ford’s global graduate programme in manufacturing and supply-chain systems. The connection between factory operations and software became an important influence on his Lean IT writing. His original biography then describes moving to Melbourne and working in a government IT innovation group before consulting.
2009 · CONFERENCE RECORD
ThoughtWorks and organisational change
The JAOO 2009 speaker programme identifies him as a Principal Consultant at ThoughtWorks in Melbourne. It describes experience with Lean and Agile organisational issues and a background in Ford manufacturing and supply-chain work. His talk, The IT Division. Refactored., connected IT organisation with Lean, systems thinking and change management. JAOO speaker record · preserved 2011 capture.
2011–2012 · CONFERENCE RECORDS
Delivery leadership at REA Group
Agile Australia’s 2011 and 2012 speaker biographies identify Durnall as Head of Delivery at REA Group in Melbourne. The 2012 programme describes responsibility for websites and mobile applications, and work leading Agile delivery practices. These are dated roles recorded by the conference, rather than claims about his present employment. 2011 programme · 2012 programme.
5 OCTOBER 2015 · AMAZON ACADEMY
Senior Vice President of Engineering at SoundCloud
Amazon’s report on the launch of Amazon Academy in Berlin identifies Richard Durnall as SoundCloud’s Senior Vice President of Engineering. It describes him discussing the audio platform’s use of Amazon Web Services: delegating infrastructure work so the team could focus on the listening experience. This is a dated first-party record of his SoundCloud title and participation in the event. Amazon Academy report · Day One Team, 5 October 2015.
2015-2016 · COMPANY PUBLICATION
SoundCloud experience and Scout24 technology leadership
Scout24 Engineering’s article of 4 August 2016 identifies Durnall as Scout24 CTO. It says he joined the company the previous year and had earlier worked at ThoughtWorks and SoundCloud. The report describes him opening the company’s Diversity in Tech community event and sharing experience from those organisations. This establishes a Scout24 role in 2016 and a 2015 joining year; it does not establish his current position. Scout24 company account · Myrtha Fuog, 2016.
SEPTEMBER 2016 · MOBILE PRODUCT CASE STUDY
Product and delivery work at ImmobilienScout24
Mobile product specialist Novoda describes Durnall, identified as ImmobilienScout24 CTO, commissioning work on the property marketplace’s iOS and Android applications. The supplier’s account covers product discovery, cross-device search, team structure and a regular delivery cycle. It dates the first release of the improved apps to September 2016. This connects his technology-leadership record with a concrete product programme; the case study is Novoda’s account of a team effort. Read Novoda’s ImmobilienScout24 case study.
2018 WORK · REPORTED 16 OCTOBER 2019
Scout24’s AI Readiness discussions
Julia Butter’s Scout24 Engineering article describes internal discussions and kickoff meetings in 2018 about the company’s approach to artificial intelligence. She identifies Richard Durnall and Director of Data Technology Markus Schmidberger as participants. The programme focused on employee learning and useful product and process changes. At publication in October 2019, the article calls Durnall a former CTO. It establishes that later status without giving an exact departure date. Later connections with technology and investment
Possible Ventures’ public network lists Rich Durnall as an angel and associates his profile with Scout24 and Soundcloud. This provides a later public connection to the technology and investment community. It does not establish the dates or scope of every role, so this profile does not infer a complete employment history from those labels. Possible Ventures network.
Professional methods and industry context
The 2009 JAOO biography described Durnall as a certified Six Sigma practitioner and a chartered member of the British Computer Society. These are historical descriptions, not a statement that a credential remains active today. The same record described consulting across financial services, government, print, online and service businesses. His presentation connected strategy deployment, value-stream mapping and organisational structure with the challenges of enterprise Agile adoption.
What his writing asks readers to examine
The following reading themes are editorial observations about the recovered articles, rather than quotations from a new conversation with Durnall.
Flow and the conditions for starting work
The push, pull and Kanban articles ask how work enters a system and why it waits. Their diagrams connect manufacturing examples with software delivery. Read them together to examine the start policy, work in progress and the distinction between appearing busy and delivering a useful result.
Lean and Agile as connected ideas
The Lean vs Agile essay considers how Lean knowledge can inform Agile practice. On 26 June 2008, Martin Fowler linked to that essay in his own discussion of the relationship between the two. This is a documented reference to the historical writing, not an endorsement of this website’s new editorial material. Fowler’s original article.
Strategy, leadership and organisational design
The Hoshin Kanri, leadership and organisational-design articles move beyond individual team ceremonies. They ask how direction, decisions and dependencies affect delivery. The IT Division presentation is a useful companion for readers examining the structure around engineering work.
Learning through questions
Interviews with Owen Berkeley-Hill, Mary Poppendieck, Kent Beck and Rand Fishkin preserve conversations about Lean thinking, software development and search. Reading these as dated interviews allows the original voices to remain distinct from the current commentary.
